Popis With the establishment of English as the lingua franca of academic communication all over the world the necessity to produce academic texts in English has become an essential skill for university students in all fields of study. This paper compares the results of two surveys into the academic writing skills of students of English at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. The aim of the investigation is twofold: 1. to receive data on students’ previous experience and knowledge of writing in English, their current writing and academic writing skills, their needs and prospective goals in further university studies; and 2. to assess the results obtained in 2009 and 2014 and reflect them in the (re)designing of courses on academic writing at a university in order to equip the students with the academic writing skills required for their professional career in the globalized academic discourse community.
