| Popis | Background and aims The choice to remain childfree is increasingly visible, yet its psychological implications remain underexplored in psychiatric research. Women who consciously decide not to have children often face stigma, which may affect their mental health and social integration. This study explores the lived experiences of childfree women, with emphasis on psychosocial impacts and psychological well-being. Methods Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with women in the Czech Republic across different age groups who identify as childfree. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to examine how participants experience and interpret their decision in relation to autonomy, social norms, and psychological functioning. Results Participants highlighted reproductive autonomy and the importance of self-determination. Social reactions ranged from supportive to stigmatizing, often reflecting traditional gender expectations. These responses, especially within families or intimate relationships, sometimes led to conflict, rejection, or difficulties finding a partner. Several participants also expressed concerns about future isolation, including fears of being left alone as peers entered parenthood and social ties shifted. While many reported psychological well-being and alignment with personal values, the risk of distress linked to stigma and loneliness was also present. Conclusions Being childfree represents a meaningful and autonomous life choice with complex psychological dimensions. Mental health professionals should recognize the legitimacy of childfree identity and understand the potential mental health consequences of societal stigma. The study adds to the discourse on reproductive justice and non-normative life paths in psychiatry.
