Teaching Controversial Issues When Democracy Is Under Attack

𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸

In the current US political climate, discussion of “controversial issues” in classrooms seems more difficult than ever, and teachers are understandably fearful of them.

This presentation will address the reasons why these discussions are so difficult now, why teaching controversial issues is an essential part of democratic citizenship education, and what research tells us about successful practices for controversial issues discussions in classroom settings.
