The third annual Conference on Research Careers 2025 will take place in Brussels, offering an overview of current policies, commemorating 20 years of the European Charter for Researchers, and opening a discussion on the future of the research environment in Europe.
The third annual Conference on Research Careers will take place in Brussels from December 10 to 12, 2025, focusing on the future of research careers in Europe. The first day will be devoted to current political issues and celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the European Charter and Code for Researchers. It will be an opportunity to look back on the progress made, share best practices, and present visions for further development.
The conference will address how Europe can create a more sustainable, excellent, and free environment for all researchers. It will build on previous successful editions and once again bring together policymakers, research experts, and stakeholder networks. Key topics will include promoting scientific excellence, enhancing the attractiveness of research careers, ensuring their stability across sectors and borders, and improving working conditions.
The conference will be followed by the Conference on Freedom of Scientific Research, organized in cooperation with UNESCO. This event will focus on how scientific work is affected by growing pressures, misinformation, surveillance, and the impact of technologies, including AI. Participants will learn about the personal experiences of scientists, current data, proposals for new European legal frameworks, and examples of good practice.
The second day of the conference (December 12) will be dedicated to HR Excellence in Research Info Day. Together, the two conferences will provide a forum for discussion on how to strengthen the European Research Area, increase the attractiveness of research careers, and protect academic freedom. The program will feature plenary sessions, thematic discussions, and networking opportunities. The events are open to both in-person and online participants; only some of the discussions on the last day will be closed.
The detailed program and registration for in-person or online participation are available on the European Commission's website here:
