Description Based on the literature and related publications, the paper answers the question: What is Lettrism? It deals with a description of the possibilities of defining this movement, it is anchoring in the contemporary context and a description of its specific features and founding members. It deals with the circumstances of the movement's origin, as well as with an enumeration of the movements that gradually followed it and the personalities of the Czech literary and artistic scene it addressed in the 1960s. Nor does it leave aside the attempt to clarify the difficulty of grasping a topic that straddles the border of two disciplines and to compare the differences between the French and Czech environments in terms of the reasons for the emergence of visual poetry.
