Description This work describes the concept of learner autonomy in language education paying closer attention to Benson's description of dimensions of control. Moreover, it outlines the approaches to the development of learner autonomy. The pedagogical background of learner autonomy is described as well mentioning the influences which impacted the current view of learner autonomy the most. It also describes the base learner autonomy has in supporting sciences (psychology, SLA). Finally, it describes the situation in the Czech Republic concerning learner autonomy and a project which was dedicated to researching learner autonomy in English lessons at a basic school in Denmark.
