Description The contribution was devoted to the topic of teaching culture and intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in Czech lower-secondary English classes and specifically to teachers' beliefs about culture and goals of teaching culture and ICC. 50 teachers took part in the investigation during the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 academic years. The aim of its first part was to find out how the teachers define culture. Qualitative content analysis of the teachers' utterances was employed in this case through which a model of teachers' beliefs about culture was formed. The second part of the investigation dealt with the teachers' goals in teaching culture and ICC. The proportion of goals aimed at developing the cognitive, affective and behavioral component of ICC, the proportion of goals aimed at Big-C Culture and small-c culture and the proportion of goals aimed at culture-general and culture-specific topics were examined. In this case, a quantitative content analysis was employed and a system of categories (Culture and ICC) was used to analyze the teachers' utterances. Goals in the cognitive domain (61%), focus on culture-specific topics (70%) and small-c culture (73%) prevailed.
