Project-based learning (PBL) is a method supporting complex and divergent thinking operations and it also support flexible learning environments. This method can develop many factors important for education process (e.g. pupils thinking, creating original solutions, developing cooperative work, finding available literary resources, presentation of finding information and evaluating own findings). Project-based learning still belongs among relatively rare and unusual methods in biology lessons at both lower secondary and high school environment. Comenius emphasized school by play, principles of illustration, activity etc. Project-based learning is based on these principles and this leads to improving of learning process, higher motivation of pupils and students or better study outcomes. Biology offers many topics, where this method could be meaningfully and effectively applicated. The aim of the contribution will be concern to the analysing of current state of the literature focusing on the application of project-based learning into biology lessons. Moreover experiences of authors will be described. Problematic areas and benefits of this method in biology lessons will be determined on the base of the literature.
