| Description | The paper analyzes popular inspiration in the Byzantine begging poetry from the 12th century. Inspiration by popular culture can be understood as a characteristic feature of this genre. This is presented on three examples: 1. the integration of the folk proverbs into the poem from prison by Michael Glykas; 2. the use of figures typical of the folk songs (double and triple parallelism) in the begging poems composed in the fifteen-syllable iambic verse (examples: Glykas, Manganeios Prodromos); 3. parallels in motives (Glykas, Ptochoprodromos III, Theodoros Prodromos XXXVIII) that may indicate a common source handed down orally. |
