Description The monograph analyses the concept "pedagogical content knowledge" introduced by Lee S. Shulman. Chapter 1 opens in the reflection on which starting point the requirements for the teachers competences and knowledge should be derived from. In chapter 2 we follow, in the course of history, the issue of the interconnection of content and pedagogy, and we attempt to explain some of the circumstances in which the concept of pedagogical content knowledge has been shaped. Chapter 3 presents an overview of the research oriented towards this type of knowledge in teachers in various educational domains (languages, mathematics, natural science, social science, physical education). Chapter 4 gives an overview of the approaches, methods and techniques used in the research of pedagogical content knowledge. By means of case studies, chapter 5 offers several views of the teachers pedagogical content knowledge. In chapter 6 we present some problems involved in curriculum development, and suggest the potential that the concept of pedagogical content knowledge possesses which can be used to solve them. In the final chapter 7 explain that one of the reasons for introducing the concept of pedagogical content knowledge was of pragmatic (political) nature, concerning the need to raise the status of the teaching profession.
