Description The aim of the study presented was to investigate physics teachers beliefs concerning instructional goals. The following questions were addressed: According to teachers, what goals should be pursued in physics instruction? How do teachers operate with goals in physics instruction? The study involved 11 teachers with whom semi-structured interviews (LINT) were conducted. The teachers statements were then transcribed and coded using the LAUKON system of categories, and elements of the teachers beliefs were reconstructed. The results show that for teachers the most important goal of physics instruction lies in improving pupils awareness of the significance of physics for an understanding of everyday problems and basic concepts and principles of physics. Typically work with instructional goals was explicit while goals and content were perceived as interchangeable. Teachers rarely referred to achieving goals that would support reflection and awareness of the students learning process.
