| Description | Approval of the General School Order (Allgemeine Schulordnung) for normal, principal and popular (trivial) schools in the Czech lands and in Austria on 6 December 1774 legalised the spontaneous alphabetisation efforts. With effect as of 1 January 1775 education became compulsory for all children between six and twelve years of age, for boys as well as girls without social differentiation. The School Order significantly extended access to education and introduced a system in teaching practice. Curricula were specified and teacher status was established. Every country of the Austrian Monarchy was expected to have normal school and preparatory schools for teachers-to-be. Principal schools were to be established in every city, or at least in every region. Popular trivial schools were to be established in towns, market villages and parish capitals or also in remote villages with filial church in the case of large parishes. |
