| Description | In recent years, a new approach for lower secondary history textbooks has been developed in the Czech Republic, sparking a wide public debate. The new contemporary history textbook – Soudobé dějiny (Pinkas et al., 2022) – follows the concept of inquiry-based learning, which emphasizes skills such as critical thinking and media literacy. The tasks linked to the HistoryLab application are based on the interpretation and analysis of various sources, including historical documents and disciplinary viewpoints. In the course of the debate, the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (Ústav pro studium totalitních režimů – ÚSTR) criticized the concept of the textbook as well as certain inaccuracies in its presentation of historical events. The Czech Ministry of Education supported the textbook and defended its concept as a solid foundation for revising the national curriculum document, shifting away from purely factual presentations. Using the example of the communist regime’s takeover in Czechoslovakia, the poster compares didactic implementations in two different history textbooks: on one hand, the didactically innovative Soudobé dějiny by Fraus Publishing, which focuses on inquiry-based learning; on the other hand, a traditional 9th-grade history textbook published by Nová škola. The focus is on the didactic approach and the use of visual media. Additionally, the arguments of the involved stakeholders (ÚSTR, publisher, author team) as well as the outcomes of the public debate surrounding Soudobé dějiny are presented. |
