Description In this talk, I investigate the present tense of unprefixed Ukrainian verbs. I show that, in addition to the two traditionally known verb classes, a third class can be identified by considering root alternations in the 1sg and 3pl forms. These alternations are of the same type as in Class 2 and result from systematic palatalization. Using Nanosyntax, I also explain why the theme vowels pop up only in one of the verb classes and not in the others. Finally, I show that stress in Ukrainian verbs is not random but depends on stress-active morphemes within a verb, which allows us to formulate the "From Left to Right" Rule of stress assignment.
