| Description | The article comments on and compares two contemporary Czech novels dealing with religious and spiritual questions of human beings, respectively their struggle with faith, transformative encounters with the transcendent, confrontation with different concepts of piety, clashes with the church, etc. Specifically, it deals with the novels Návrat (Return) by Petra Dvořáková and Svatá (Holy) by Sára Zeithammerová (both published in 2025), which it places in the context of similarly focused Czech prose works that have been appearing relatively frequently in recent years (see, for example, Nonstop Eufrat by Veronika Bendová, Senzibil by Markéta Pilátová, Stopy za obzor by Pavel Kolmačka, and Svatá hlava by Hana Lehečková. Despite their different settings (the 1990s in the case of Návrat the 1990s and Svatá in the 19th century) and different starting points (personal experience vs. historical legend), the works of Petra Dvořáková and Sára Zeithammerová intersect in their interest in female heroes, the depiction of their inner worlds, and the effort to show the existence of characters in society. |
