Description The study intends to provide an interpretative analysis of the unpublished prose Evžen, written by Zdeněk Barborka, and offers the possibility of situating it in the broader context of unpublished literature in the period of normalization. In Czech literature of the 20th century, we can encounter the name Zdeněk Barborka in the context of experimental (concrete) poetry, which dynamically grew during the second half of the 1960s in the circle of authors around Jiří Kolář and Josef Hiršal. After 1968 Barborka closed himself into creative and interpersonal isolation, but he continued to search for creative possibilities to express deeply existential themes, dealing with the topic of collective and individual memory, the authenticity of human existence. These themes play a fundamental role in the self-reflexive prose to which his late poetics turns and in which he finds new possibilities of experimental expression in the form of short stories “etudes” and advanced postmodern studies. Zdeněk Barborka’s proses offer a number of crucial and actual themes and it represents a not fully explored and appreciated site in the history of Czech literature.
