Description The educational system in modern time is predominantly organized by the state, with its functions encompassing the integration of young people into existing society and the legitimization of the prevailing social and political system. Therefore, it is logical that a political shift, such as the fall of the Iron Curtain, would lead to changes in the educational system. However, the education system also adheres to its inherent logic, which often supersedes political transformations. Continuities within the educational system persist across political changes, and when political transformations instigate educational reforms, the outcomes may diverge significantly from the intended aims. Thus, there exists a close yet non-trivial relationship between the political system and the educational system. The contributions in this volume examine the evolution of the educational system since 1989 in post-socialist European countries. The focus extends to school structures and their legal framework, as well as aspects that are only indirectly regulated by such directives: cultures of teaching and learning, the interaction between teachers and learners, as well as the self-concept and attitudes of those involved.
