Description Freshman courses organised when pupils move to a higher level of the education system usually focus on facilitating a new living situation associated with new demands and environment. However, the benefits of adaptation courses can be of a wider and more universal nature. This paper presents the results of research on the development of social competencies through freshman courses. Based on qualitative research, in which interviews were conducted with representatives from educational counsellors, prevention methodologists and representatives of organisations focused on the implementation of adaptation courses for schools, it highlights the principles developed through adaptation courses that are universal to other challenging life situations.
