Description A child's psychological development is related to his specific way of understanding the world, which is undoubtedly reflected in the thematic and genre selection of his own reading. In general theory and based on practical research in the field of children's reading, certain genre specifics correspond to each developmental age. The need to deal with this genre categorization lies on two levels. It characterizes the specific needs of a given age period, but it also serves as a sure support for educators or other adults who choose literary titles for children's readers. The paper deals with the research of preferences, popularity and genre topicality in the field of literature selection and reading among contemporary third-grade children's readers in the context of reading maturation and psychological development. It is based on the results of partial parts of the dissertation research focused on the identification of a child of younger school age with a literary work and a theatrical performance.
