Description The presentation summarizes the results of research into the use of one type of metadiscourse marker – attitude markers – as defined by Hyland and Tse (2004), with the aim of investigating how L1 and L2 academic writers express their stance towards the propositional content and communicate it to the reader. Attitude markers, namely attitudinal adjectives, verbs, nouns and adverbs are studied in three corpora of academic texts written by Czech graduate students, English native-speaker university students and expert writers.
