Description University students are asked to produce texts (especially argumentative and expository) that require accurate textual planning, adequate use of logical-syntactic cohesion tools and precise or specialized vocabulary. For LS Italian students, academic writing requires a high level of mastery of the syntactic level of the language, which, however, cannot ignore also the proper use of the interpunctual signs that the system has at its disposal and that help to achieve intralinguistic variation, thus distinguishing textual types. Taking into account the uses, errors, knowledge and interpretation of interpunctory signs of Czech and Slovak students in their L1 and Italian L2, this contribution aims to bring out both the need and the usefulness of language teaching that also develops interpunctory competence.
