Description Cognitive activation is one of the characteristics of a new, productive culture of teaching and learning. The study aims to map recent research in the area of cognitive activation in school instruction. Via a systematic mapping review, we analysed 53 studies from the Web of Science database. Preliminary results show that mathematics and language learning are dominant fields of research in cognitive activation. Among emerging research topics are teacher support in creating higher-order learning tasks and comparing the effectiveness of various cognitive level tasks on pupils learning.
