Description In this paper we present the results of an ethnographic study focused on how mentor teachers support pre-service teachers in working with student diversity during their practicum at lower-secondary schools. Drawing on two ways of mentoring employed by the mentors—providing feedback and modeling prac- tice—we identified seven strategies that the mentors used and three types of their impact on pre-service teacher’ beliefs and practices related to student diversity. Overall, the outcomes present a contradiction: when the mentors model practice, they tend to emphasize individuality; however, when they provide feedback, they tend to emphasize universality.
