Description The presentation deals with the existing research into test-taking strategies used by students in receptive skills language tests. The review includes 23 studies from 1998 to 2020, only empirical studies published in journals in the Scopus and Web of Science databases were included. The presentation deals with the analysis of several areas – varying definitions of test-taking strategies, research methodology, research questions and results. The findings show that research is primarily quantitative; the respondents are mostly university students. Researchers use standardized tests, the test-taking strategy inventories used are very different. Studies often focus on finding a correspondence between the number of strategies used and the results achieved in the tests. The results of the research are not conclusive, the relationship between the use of strategies and the results of the tests has only been confirmed by several of the studies. On the contrary, research on test-taking strategy instruction clearly shows the positive effect of such instruction on test results. Other research focuses on the effectiveness of individual strategies; nevertheless, this area has yet to be sufficiently explored.
