Description The objective of the project is to provide a contrastive analysis of persuasive strategies and linguistic realizations of persuasion in English and Czech specialised discourses (academic, business, technical and religious), which have been undergoing fast development as a result of globalization and have not been studied contrastively. The researchers will combine sociolinguistic, contrastive-rhetoric and discourse analytic approaches to the description, classification and comparison of contextual and audience-oriented rhetorical strategies and linguistic means of persuasion. The research will focus on identifying universals of persuasive discourse, explaining how contextual and genre-specific constraints affect variation across English and Czech specialized discourses, and analysing social and linguistic reasons for cross-linguistic variation in the manifestation of persuasion. The project results (series of articles, monograph) will deepen our understanding of recent developments in persuasion in specialized discourses and can be used in education and in the communication domain.
