Description The international conference entitled “The Image of Foreigner in Literature” was held from March 8th to 9th 2018 at the Faculty of Education of the Masaryk University in Brno and was organized by the Department of Czech Language and Literature. The main aim of the conference was to provide space for critical analyzes and interpretations of the images of foreigners in literature and for a more general discussion of the images of foreigners in the literature that were created and disseminated during the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. The characteristics of a foreigner implicitly comprise not only movement within a geographic space, but also the aspect of otherness. In literary context, the motif and character of the foreigner has to do, for example, with vagrancy, wandering, a nomadic way of life; lack of territorial embeddedness is reflected in existential isolation and vice versa. Participants of the conference addressed this issue from many different perspectives. The main thematic topics of the conference were, for example, Foreigners and Borders, Foreigners in Czech Literature and Drama, Foreigners: Forms and Metamorphoses, Foreigners and Paths. The keynote speakers of the conference were prof. Xavier Galmiche (Université Paris-IV Sorbonne, Paris) and prof. Petr Steiner (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia). The conference offered a revisited view of literary communication as a part of intercultural communication.
