Description The study analyses the concept and development of Standards for teacher education in Germany which were developed on request of The Conference of German Education Ministers (KMK). Their declared aim is to enhance the quality of education by means of defining and checking competencies of graduates of teacher education programmes and related evaluations of teacher education. In this context, we analyse the development of this issue from the point of view of researchers who stand outside the system and conclude by comparing the situation with the Czech Republic. In the introductory part, we present basic information about the context of the topic, i.e. about the teacher education in Germany. Then we describe theoretical background of the KMK standards and analyse them in the context of the new public management. Next we introduce the standards by presenting concrete examples. In the concluding part, we mention how the situation of standardisation of teacher education has developed, what has been positively accepted and what has been criticized.
