Description The paper discusses the relation between interpretation and explanation in cultural sociology drawing on the early sociological works of Karl Mannheim. The dialectics between the surface of social life and cultural depth requires a particular type of interpretation which Mannheim dubbed «documentary interpretation». We can understand this structure as a «cultural background» that constitutes intentional acts and renders them meaningful.
