Description In Moravian history, the sixteen thirties have been characterised by Josef Válka as a time of a changing of the guard in political generations. Franz of Dietrichstein and Charles of Zierotin the Elder retired from the political scene. In the last decade of his life, Zierotin in particular can be said to have been a "politician of leisure". He was not allowed a direct influence over political events, thought his extensive correspondence testifies to a phenomenon that deserves wider attention and to the possibilities for the passing generation to influence political events from outside the formal power structure.
