| Description | Popular educational magazines, along with popular educational literature, factual literature, historical journalism, memoir literature, fiction, feature films and documentary historical films are all important and well-established teaching aids used in history lessons. Development of popular educational historical and historio-didactic magazines occurred in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War. After 1948, however, their content was fundamentally influenced by communist ideology and the uncritical acceptance and glamorisation of Soviet historiography and didactics as a model. Today, little use can be made of the magazines Společenské nauky ve škole (Social Science in School) and Dějepis ve škole (History in School) from the historical or didactic perspective. An exception is provided by a number of topics and regular columns from the 1980s (e.g. auxiliary historical sciences, chapters in the history of art, chapters in the history of Czech historiography). They are, however, useful as a source providing testimony to the time in which they appeared. The popularisation of history in magazine form flourished once again after 1989. The renowned magazine Dějiny a současnost (History and the Present Day), published in the years 1959–1969, holds a special position in the period studied as a whole. It was later banned, and publication was only resumed in 1990. |
