Doctoral study is special for its emphasis on individual activities of students. It is part of a structured study system. The conditions of study are specified in Act No. 111/1998 The Higher Education Act and Regulations for Studies and Examinations at Masaryk University. In order to apply and be considered for a Doctorate Programme a student must have completed his or her Master´s Degree and demonstrate scientific work potential.
The Faculty of Education at Masaryk University offers three doctoral study programs in eight accredited study fields.
Doctoral degree programmes at the Faculty of Education can be pursued either full-time (on-campus) or part-time (off-campus).
The primary aim of a doctoral study programmes is to build a methodological foundation for either theoretical or empirical scientific work to be put in practice primarily on academic grounds as well as in scientific research institutions.
Students can study abroad with double supervision, based on an agreement between Masaryk University and a foreign university. The degree gained abroad on such conditions is valid.
According to Act No. 111/1998 (amended and consolidated) on Higher Education Institutions and on Amendments and Supplements to Some Other Acts (The Higher Education Act), all doctoral programmes applicants must have previously completed their Master´s education. Applicants who have obtained a degree abroad need to supply a recognition of foreign university education certificate. It is possible to apply for validation of Master´s education at the Office for Studies of the Rector's Office MU.
The applicant must also pass the entrance examination in order to be considered for admission.
Application Fee
It is necessary to pay an application fee of CZK 800. The payment of the fee must be made through Shopping Center MU (contact is included directly in your e-application).
Note: When doing a bank transfer from abroad banks may charge fees related to the transfer to an account in a foreign country. It is necessary that a full amount of CZK 800 is credited to the MU´s account.
Verification Fee
Verification fee is for applicants interested in verification of their documents by Faculty of Education. Please note, this verification is just for Faculty of Education´s purpose only and thus can replace official nostrification only in the admission procedure at the Faculty of Education.
It is necessary to pay a verification fee of CZK 850. The payment of the fee must be made through Shopping Center MU (the link will be sent to interested applicants).

Tuition Fee
A fee is required for the study programmes taught in a foreign language. Students have to pay the full cost. The fee is EUR 2400 for an academic year (2023/2024). Accepted applicants will be informed during enrollment of the specific method of payment for the tuition fee.

Application Deadlines
Applications to study must be submitted on-line via the e-application form – between 1 February until 30 April for studies commencing in the autumn term. No late submissions will be accepted. The applicant will have to wait for the following admission period.
Entrance examination dates
An invitation to take the entrance examination will be sent to the applicant after he or she has fulfilled all the conditions for admission and submitted the application.
The entrance examination consists of:
Full-time Doctoral students are required to teach at the faculty (approx. 4 lessons/week) and assist in specialized activities assigned to them by the head of the department (approx. 4-8 hours/week). Doctoral candidates work in close cooperation with their supervisors and in accordance with Study and Examination Regulations whilefollowin their individual study plan (ISP).
Full-time Doctoral students may use various student benefits (accommodation in student halls of residence, canteen boarding, public transport fare reductions, etc.).
Part-time students are usually employed. Their study requirements have to be fulfilled according to their individual study plan and Study and Examination Regulations. It is mandatory for part-time students to be in frequent contact with his or her supervisor.
According to section 15 of the Study and Examination Regulation, a closure of studies may take place in the following ways:
A person ceases to be a student of MU on the day of closure of his/her studies or on the day of closure of his/her last concurrent studies. Students whose studies were successfully completed are issued a university diploma and diploma supplement as proof of completion of studies. On request, the faculty will provide a graduate with a translation of his/her diploma into English, including a faculty stamp and authorized person’s signature.
Prerequisites for submitting a doctoral state examination application include the fulfillment of all of the requirements specified in section 28, subsections 3 and 4 of the Study and Examination Regulation. The doctoral thesis topic must be presented no later than at application submission, unless otherwise prescribed by the doctoral board. The application shall be submitted to the dean via the IS MU by a date specified by the academic year chart and timetable. The dean sets the doctoral state examination date dean during the semester that the student applied for by the designated deadline following a recommendation by the doctoral board. The general requirements of a doctoral state examination are specified in programme content. Additional requirements stipulated by the doctoral board must be communicated to the student in written form no later than four weeks prior to the examination date.
Should a student fail the doctoral state examination, he/she is entitled to repeat the examination no more than once. The dean, following the recommendation of the doctoral board, shall set an alternate date. The dean may interrupt a student´s studies until the alternate doctoral state examination date. In case a student is absent on the designated date of the doctoral state examination and subsequently fails to provide an acceptable reason for his/her absence within five workdays following that date, his/her performance is assessed as “unacceptable”.
Doctoral thesis requirements are specified in section 30 of the Study and Examination Regulation. The extent, form and number of hard copies of the abstract as well as all other requirements are specified and announced by the dean or the doctoral board. The requirements for submitting a doctoral thesis defense application comprise the following:
The date for submitting a doctoral theseis defense is set by the dean according to the recommendations provided by the doctoral board. The defense takes place in the semester specified in the application. The dean, following a reccommendation by the dotoral board, appoints no less than two doctoral thesis readers. A student has the right to be informed of the evaluations no less than a minimum of seven days prior to the defense.
