Citation
Description This chapter provides a theoretical and methodological background to the whole book. It stems from the concept of life long learning of which adult education is a particular part. The need for life long learning has been brought about by three kinds of social forces: by the speed of social change, by obsolescence of many of traditional occupations and by change in value preferences. Basic features of adult education are: 1. education is not limited to to a certain stage of individual life cycle any longer; 2. It does not mean only formal education but also other forms (non-formal and informal): this enables to acquire knowledge by various means and ways; 3. It gives a chance to get educated despite of age, talent or social status - it is chance for all. These assumptions were translated into the proper research questions. Data that would enable to answer them were collected by a special representative survey. Operationalization of research questions was based on theory of rational choice and of reasoned action with respect to value of education in lives of individuals.
