Description The introduction points out the most important research results of the contemporary theory of onomastics. Those can also be considered to be the theoretical starting point of the current surname research. Not all results, however, are of the same validity. The incorporation and function of repertoires and surname systems into social communication are of extraordinary significance. The interpretation of the surnames poses the question whether the contact of languages means also the contact of propria. Upon researching the aspect of the inter-language contact of the surnames, attention needs to be paid to the extent of how the individual elements of the surname structure are affected by the contact with another language (type of creation and formation, motivation change, morphology, etc.). Adoption to the naming models appears to be of a critical relevance. Therefore, language elements contributing to the onymic contact are of internal or external natures: internal aspects are subordinated to the systems of the proprial sphere of contact languages while the external ones reflect the typology and generic properties of the social communication systems. Examples from Czech-German language contacts are provided.
