Description The article draws attention to the development of fonctions of definite article in the Old French. The study is based on the comparison of medieval texts (Serments de Strasbourg from the IXth century, Séquence de Sainte Eulalie from the IXth century, La Vie de Saint Alexis from the XIth century, Charroi de Nîmes from the XIIth century, Cliges by Chrétien de Troyes from the XIIth century). 671 excerpts were divided by the significtion of names, their syntactic fonction and by the combination of definite article with other word class. From the first texts the definite article acts as one of the principal means of the functional sentence perspective. It progressively takes other functions to become a mark of the substantive actualisation in speech.
