Language proficiency levels according to the CEFR

A2 level

An A2 level language user understands sentences and frequently used expressions relating to areas that closely concern them (e.g. basic information about them and their family, shopping, location and profession). They can communicate through simple and common tasks that require simple and direct exchange of information about familiar and common facts. They can describe in simple terms their own family, immediate surroundings and matters relating to their most pressing needs.

 

B1 level

A B1 level language user understands the main ideas of comprehensible written input on common topics they regularly encounter at work, school, free time, etc. They can cope with most situations that may arise when travelling in the area where the language is spoken. They can write a simple, coherent text on topics they know well or are personally interested in. They can describe their experiences and events, dreams, hopes and goals and can briefly explain and justify their opinions and plans.

B2 level

A B2 level language user can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both specific and abstract topics, including specialist discussions in their field. They can participate in conversation fluently and spontaneously enough that they can carry on a normal conversation with native speakers without requiring increased effort from either interaction participant. They can write comprehensible and detailed texts on a wide range of topics and explain their point of view on a current issue, including listing advantages and disadvantages of different options.

C1 level

A C1 level language user can understand a wide range of challenging and long texts and recognise the implicit meanings of texts. They can express themselves fluently and promptly without overtly searching for expressions. They can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. A C1 level language user can produce clear, well-organised, detailed texts on complex topics, demonstrating their mastery of compositional structures, linking expressions and cohesive devices.
