St. Nicolas event for students
Let's celebrate the traditional Czech winter holiday together!
Masaryk University, together with Charles University, has issued recommendations on how to approach personal and close relationships safely, transparently, and with respect for the entire academic community. The Faculty of Education at MU was prompted to take an active approach to this issue by the 2024 equal opportunities audit, with the aim of unifying the position of the faculty and the university.
Close relationships also arise in academic environments – between students, colleagues, or during research. They can be beneficial, but sometimes they can also be a source of complications. The MU Ombudsman, in cooperation with the Ombudsman of Charles University, has prepared a document entitled Close Relationships on Academic Grounds – Grand Statement 2025. The opinion summarizes experiences from Czech and foreign universities and offers specific recommendations on how to approach close relationships sensitively and transparently.
The most problematic relationships are those involving unequal positions, such as teacher and student or supervisor and subordinate. The document emphasizes that the person with greater authority bears greater responsibility and recommends disclosing close relationships and withdrawing from evaluative or leadership roles.
Masaryk University has long-established rules and support mechanisms in place, including a code of ethics, social safety strategy, training, and discussions. Students and employees can take advantage of the services of an ombudsman, ethics committees, and psychological counseling. All situations are handled confidentially, with respect for the rights of all parties.
