CONFERENCE CALL

The Conference will be held in Brno from 9 to 11 September 2011. The host institution will be the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University.

The organizing committee wants to link to the successful tradition of previous Signposts Conferences and wants to attract ELT professionals from the Czech Republic as well as from abroad.

The Conference will offer a varied programme of

  • talks

  • workshops

  • demonstrations

  • research-oriented presentations

  • poster sessions

The range of topics to be discussed is wide enough for everybody to participate and contribute to the success of the conference. We would like to encourage the presentations by both non-native and native speakers of English.

Presentations will include a number of varied topics which will be divided into the following strands:

  • ELT for Young Learners (pre-primary, primary) YL ELT

  • ELT for Secondary Schools (lower and upper secondary) SS ELT

  • ELT for Language Schools LS ELT

  • ELT Teacher Education ELTE

  • ESP (vocational and university) ESP

As in previous years, it is expected that a number of distinguished plenary speakers will attend. A major resources exhibition will also be open throughout the conference. There will be a range of social events and entertainment, which will help to renew acquaintances made at earlier conferences.

The Conference has been accredited by MŠMT, accreditation number c.j.:32812/2010-25-781.

Third Call for Papers

We would like to remind you that the Fourth Brno Conference on Linguistics Studies in English Interpretation of Meaning in Spoken and Written Discourse will be held in Brno on 16-17 September 2010 at the Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University.  

The Fourth Brno Conference focuses on interpretation of meaning in spoken and written English discourse. While the thematic scope of the contributions is expected to be very wide, we particularly welcome topics exploring aspect of discourse coherence, cohesion relations, pragmatic strategies in the interpretation of discourse, dialogic aspects of written and spoken interaction and genre-specific strategies for the negotiation of meaning in spoken and written discourse. 

The Conference will take place at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno. A preliminary programme of the two-day conference will be sent in August.  

We are pleased to announce that the following keynote speakers have confirmed their participation at the Conference:

Prof. Henry Widdowson, University of Vienna, Austria

Prof. László I. Komlósi, University of Pécs, Hungary & Konstantin University Nitra, Slovakia

Prof. Gabriela Miššíková, University of Nitra, Slovakia

Contributions presented at the Conference will be published either in the Conference monograph or in the linguistics journal Discourse and Interaction. The length of the papers submitted should be 4,000 to 6,000 words. A Style Guide will be sent in August. Authors will receive a free copy of the respective volume. Further copies may be ordered. As the publication of the Conference monograph is financed by a grant project, it should be sent to the printing house at the end of November. Therefore the deadline for submitting contributions is the 10th of October and can be by no means postponed. The same applies to contributions to the journal Discourse and Interaction 

There will be a conference fee of CZK 1000 (€40) and participants must pay their own travel and accommodation costs. The conference fee includes conference materials, including a book of abstracts, a copy of the Conference monograph, coffee-break refreshments and the Conference dinner on the 16th of September.

Accommodation will be arranged, if required. We can provide accommodation for any of the nights 15-16, 16-17 and 17-18 September at the university hotel. Unfortunately, since the dates of our Conference coincide with a big fair in Brno, there has been a change in the price of accommodation. The price of a double room including breakfast is CZK 1180; when occupied by a single person the price of the double room is CZK 890. We can also book rooms at the Continental hotel in the centre of the city where the prices are: for the night 15-16 Sept., a double room including breakfast - CZK 2900 and a single room including breakfast - CZK 2760; for the rest of the nights, the prices are: a double room including breakfast - CZK 1500 and a single room including breakfast - CZK 1050.

Stories and Narratives in Foreign Language Teaching

The conference will deal with using stories and narratives as tools in English language teaching. A pre-conference workshop designed for university students will feature Andrew Wright, who is also the keynote speaker for the conference. The workshop will offer activities for using stories and storytelling in primary and secondary classrooms. The conference itself will have presentations, workshops and a panel discussion examining using stories and narratives for teachers and teacher-trainers.

Call for papers

Papers must be submitted by May 1, 2009. The conference committee will notify individuals by May 10, 2009, which papers are accepted for presentation at the conference. Besides those papers presented at the conference, other papers will be selected to be included in the conference CD as well.

Papers should be submitted in APA format.

Call for Papers Second Biannual International Conference Regional Issues: Conference on Literature, Culture and History Theme for 2009: India since 1800 Thursday, January 29, 2009 Organized by the Section for Literature and Culture, English Dpt., Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic After the first conference in 2007, which focused on Scotland, the theme for 2009 is India or South Asia. Given the scope and history of the diverse Indian subcontinent, the conference focuses on South Asian literature written in English (or Indo-English lit.). Literary texts alone offer opportunities to examine cultural issues and problems that span the Empire and After periods, examining various aspects of the ancient and diverse, colonial and postcolonial culture and history of the Indian subcontinent, and a former English colony, since 1800. Papers and talks should reflect, among other ideas, these themes: - Passage to India (revisited), and Diasporic Migrations, global conceptualization of regional worlds - Orientality (focus on Western Imperial Perspective) - East Meets West, amalgamation of cultures, tradition versus modernity, sites of cultural productions - Empire and After (cultural and area studies analyses) The language of the conference is English. Each paper will be allotted 15 minutes for a presentation. A photo exhibition on India by Kamila Berndorff will be opened at the opening of the conference on the premises of the English Dpt. Send an abstract (about 200 words) plus brief biographical details to the address below by December 15, 2008. You will be informed about the acceptance of your proposal and slot in the conference program by December 19, 2008. A call for attendees without papers will follow with the outline of the programme. The proceedings of the conference will be published in the second half of 2009. Instructions concerning the form and maximum length of the paper will be provided at the conference. The Third International Brno Conference on Linguistics Studies in English is organized by the Department of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University in Brno. The conference focuses on the study of cohesion and coherence in written and spoken discourse and aims to bring together researchers and university teachers to discuss and share research insights. We expect papers reflecting current research projects the aim of which is to reveal the stylistic diversity, non-homogeneity, and socio-pragmatic variation of language. The Third Brno Conference on Linguistics Studies in English - Coherence and Cohesion in Spoken and Written Discourse will be held in Brno on 22-23 September 2008 at the Department of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University.
