Conditions and criteria for admission to study at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University

I. The basic conditions for admission to study according to § 48, Act No 111/1998 Coll., Higher Education Act

1.    The condition for admission to study in the Bachelors and Masters programme is completion of secondary or secondary specialized education.
2.    The condition for admission to study in a Masters programme which is a follow-up of the Bachelors programme of study is proper completion of study in the Bachelors programme.

II. Other conditions for admission to study according to § 49 of Act No 111/1998 Coll., Higher Education Act

1.    One condition for admission of an applicant to the study in the Bachelors and Masters programme of study is that the applicants take an entrance exam to check the level of general prerequisites for study in the form of a written Test of Prerequisites for Study.
2.    Programmes and fields of study stipulated by the Dean may be another condition for admission to the study, namely testing certain knowledge, abilities or talents of the applicant through a special exam or an audition. This exam is part of the entrance examination.
3.    Another condition for admission to study in the Bachelors and Masters programmes is ranking among the best applicants in the order which is derived from the evaluation of all parts of the entrance exam in accordance with its assessment criteria.
4.    The conditions for admission to study in the Masters programme which is a follow-up of a Bachelors programme may be that certain knowledge in programmes and fields of study stipulated by the Dean is checked, as well as the abilities or gift of the applicant by a specialized exam or by public audition. The faculty may set the conditions referring to relatedness of the study fields.
5.    Another condition for being admitted to study in the Masters programme which is a follow-up to the Bachelors programme of study may be evaluation of the course of the relevant Bachelor study.
6.    The condition for admission to study in the Masters programme which is a follow-up of a Bachelors programme is ranking among the best applicants in the order based on evaluation of the entrance exam and a possible addition of evaluation of the course of a relevant Bachelor study by the criteria for evaluation of the entrance test.
7.    The Dean may decide to allow an applicant not to take the entrance examination if they have gained at least 45 credits in lifelong education within the framework of an accreditated programme of study in the past academic year (i.e. in the academic year immediately preceding the academic year when study was commenced) or at least 30 credits in the preceding semester and gained in total at least 60 credits for completed courses which correspond to the courses of the programme of study he/she applied for in the admission procedure.
This exception must be requested in writing. The request is filed immediately after obtaining an appropriate number of credits at the Lifelong Education Department by the end of the exam period stipulated by the timetable of the given academic year. Credits gained by the lifelong student in an accredited programme by means of recognition from a possible previous study or a lifelong education programme will be accepted for the purpose of exception from the entrance examination.
8.    When foreigners are accepted to study in Bachelors and Masters programmes the Dean must keep to the obligations arising from international agreements that the Czech Republic has agreed to meet. If the programme of study is not meant as one taught in a foreign language to foreigners, the Dean may require the applicant to pass a Czech language exam as a condition for admission to study.
9.    The Dean may accept an applicant with special requirements outside of the normal order, provided he/she passes the entrance examination successfully.
10.    The Dean may accept an applicant who has completed the programme or part of it or is studying in another programme at a university or college in the Czech Republic or abroad, according to Other conditions for admission to study at the Faculty of Education, MU, in accordance with § 49 par. 3 of Act No 111/1998 Coll., Higher Education Act (for more see section IV).

III. Criteria for evaluation of the entrance examination according to § 49 par. 5 of the Act No 111/1998 Coll., Higher Education Act

a) Bachelors and Masters programmes of study
6.    Evaluation of the entrance examination will be done with the use of percentiles. A percentile is calculated on the basis of the number of correct answers in the version of the entrance examination done by the applicant. The percentile expresses how many per cent of applicants achieved a lower or the same result.
7.    The total result of the entrance examination of an applicant will be the sum of percentiles gained in the individual parts of the entrance examination.
8.    The test of study competence is assessed maximally by the hundredth and minimally the first percentile according to the rules determined by the Rector.
9.    Department-specific examinations and auditions from one field of study (if they are set out by the Dean) are evaluated maximally by the hundredth and minimally by the first percentile.
10.    The order of applicants is given by arranging them by the sums of the respective percentiles achieved in individual parts of the entrance examination.
b) Follow-up Masters programmes
5.    Evaluation of the entrance examination will be carried out with the use of percentiles. A percentile is calculated on the basis of the number of correct answers in the variant of the entrance examination done by the applicant. The percentile expresses how many per cent of applicants achieved a lower or the same result.
6.    The total result of the entrance examination of an applicant will be the sum of percentiles gained in the individual parts of the entrance examination.
7.    Department-specific examinations and auditions from one field of study (if they are set out by the Dean) are evaluated maximally by the hundredth and minimally by the first percentile.
8.    The order of applicants is given by arranging them by the sums of the respective percentiles achieved in individual parts of the entrance examination.

IV. Special conditions for admission to study according to § 49 par. 3 of the Act No 111/1998 Coll., Higher Education Act

1.    The admission procedure according to § 49 par. 3 of the Higher Education Acta is initiated by delivery of a written application to the faculty´s Study Department. The application must contain the following:
a) a legalized copy of a certificate of having completed the study in a programme or part of itb or a certificate of an applicant’s ongoing studyc,
b) the title of the programme of study, field of study or their combination applied for,
c) the mode of study which the applicant is applying for (full-time, combined),
d) a brief explanation of the request.
A written request (including the signature) is submitted to the faculty´s Study Department. The addressees are thus not the Rector, the Vice-Rector, the Dean or the Vice-Dean. If an applicant fails to provide the required documents of the completed study, the Study Department will request their additional submission. The applicant shall not use the term “transfer” which is not supported by the Act as it is an admission procedure.
2.    The written application must be marked by the applicant according to the following classification:
a) P – application for admission to the same or similar programme or field of study (or combination of fields),
b) M – application for admission/change of a programme/field of study for some unusual reasons.
The code P will be used by an applicant who is studying or studied at another faculty of Masaryk University or at another university or college (in the Czech Republic as well as abroad) and is going to  continue his/her study at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University in the same or similar programme or field of study. The identity or similarity of the programme and field of study will be assessed by the relevant department of the faculty. The completed part of study is understood as a minimum of one completed year (corresponding to 60 credits). The year of graduation from the study or its part plays no role.
The code M is for applicants who, for serious reasons (health, social or other) apply for admission to study in a different programme and field of study part or the whole of which he/she has completed in the past. The reasons need to be specified and evidenced.
3.    The admission procedure of applicants of group P does not comprise an entrance examination. Admission is conditioned by the opinion of the department guaranteeing the given programme, which is limited by accreditation, completion of the required study and capacity for teaching. The order of applicants in this admission procedure is determined by the date they file the application.
4.    The admission procedure for applicants in group M is governed by the decision of the Dean of the faculty and usually comprises an entrance examination. The exam is at the time and in the form determined by the Dean. The entrance examination is organized by the faculty´s Study Department.
5.    The date of commencing the study is determined by the Dean. The study usually starts at the beginning of an academic year.

a. According to § 49 par. 3 of the Higher Education Act a faculty can determine different conditions for admission of applicants who have completed the programme of study or part of it or are studying in a different programme at a university or college in the Czech Republic or abroad.
b. This may be a university diploma, school report, diploma supplement or a certificate of completing the exams.
c. This is a confirmation of study issued by a university or college. Students of MU will quote their identification code (učo).
